You can choose to display the guide as a grid, or use the TiVo Live Guide. When you're viewing the guide, press ENTER to display Guide Options and choose the view you want.

How to search by title (and more!)

You can search by show title or a person's name (actor, director, etc.). The TiVo Service searches upcoming broadcast shows, web videos, and video on demand offerings all at the same time.

  1. From Tivo Central®, select 'Find TV, movies, & videos,' then choose 'Search.'
  2. The next screen has a grid of letters. Use the RIGHT, LEFT, UP, and DOWN arrows on your TiVo remote to move around the grid, then press SELECT to choose a letter.

As you select letters, the TiVo service searches through all broadcast, web video, and video on demand offerings available for up to the next two weeks, and lists matches on the right side of the screen. For example, if you enter the letters HOW, you might see matches for the TV show "How I Met Your Mother," the video on demand movie "How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days," and the director Ron Howard. Results are sorted by popularity, with better matches appearing higher in the list.

  3. Keep selecting letters until you see what you're searching for, then use the RIGHT arrow to highlight the show, and press SELECT to view the information screen.

  4. Select "Get this show" to record the next showing or to set up a Season Pass recording.

  5. From the information screen, you can also view upcoming episodes or an episode guide, learn more about cast members, and even access bonus features!

Tip: Replace hyphens ( - ), slashes ( / ) and periods ( . ) with spaces. For example, use 20 20 to search for the title "20/20." Any other marks, such as apostrophes ( ’ ), asterisks ( * ) and ampersands ( & ) are ignored. For example, use 6 OCLOCK NEWS to search for the title "6 O'Clock News."

All recorded shows appear in your "My Shows" list, which you can access simply by pressing the TiVo button on your remote control twice!

How to use the Discovery Bar and Video Window

When you use TiVo Premiere with HD menus, the Discovery Bar and video window appear at the top of most TiVo screens, putting a variety of recommendations at your fingertips.

Using the Discovery Bar

The Discovery Bar is a great way to find new shows based on what your TiVo Premiere knows you already like, but it doesn't contain only shows. You'll also find actors, collections of related shows, web video providers, and more.

What you'll see in the Discovery Bar depends on what shows you record and mark as your favorites. For example, if you record the show "American Idol," the Discovery Bar might display other shows like "So You Think You Can Dance." It all depends on what you're interested in and what's available to you.

  1. From any TiVo screen with the Discovery Bar visible, press the UP arrow on your TiVo remote until one of the images in the Discovery Bar is highlighted. The selection expands, explaining why the show was recommended for you. (To exit the Discovery Bar, just press the DOWN arrow.)
  2. Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrows on your TiVo remote to move to other items on the Discovery bar. With any item highlighted, press SELECT to record the next episode, schedule a Season Pass recording, view upcoming episodes, or view bonus features.

Using the Video Window

The Video Window is located in the right corner of the Discovery Bar and the program guide screen, unless you choose to turn it off or temporarily hide it.* The Video Window continues playing the show you were watching when you entered TiVo Central.

To control the Video Window:

  1. Press PAUSE on your TiVo remote to pause the video in the Video Window. Press PAUSE again to resume playing.
  2. Press SLOW on your TiVo remote to temporarily hide the Video Window. Press SLOW again to restore the Video Window.
  3. If you'd rather permanently turn off the Video Window, from TiVo Central, select 'Settings & Messages' > 'Settings' > 'Displays' > 'Video Window.'

    * You cannot hide or turn off the video window that appears with the program guide.

How to create a WishList® search

Know what you like, but not sure if or when it’s on? Create a WishList search. You can search on actor, keyword, or category. Better yet, you can tell the search what sorts of results to include. Select the “Auto-Record” option, and every time a show matching your criteria airs, it will be recorded.

Creating a WishList search

  1. From TiVo Central, select one of the following:
    Select "Find Shows".
    Select "WishList saved searches"
    Select "Create a WishList Search."
  2. Next, enter as many of the following criteria as you like:

Keyword or Title: With a Keyword search, the TiVo service looks for your keywords in the show or episode title, description, actor, director, year, and category information. A Title search looks only at show and episode titles.

Spell your keyword(s) using the arrow buttons on your remote to move around the grid; then press SELECT to enter a letter. When you’re finished, move to "Finished creating keywords," then press SELECT.

Actor or Director: Spell the last name using the arrow buttons on your remote to move around the grid; then press SELECT to enter a letter. As you select letters, a list of names appears to the right of the grid. When you see the person’s name, move to the list. Use the UP/DOWN arrows to highlight the name you want, then press SELECT.

Category: Choose a category and, if desired, a subcategory.
  3. Use either THUMBS buttons on your remote control to get even better results:

Press SELECT to edit a term, then press a THUMB button once to exclude it from your search (adds a minus sign). Press again to make the term optional in your search (puts it in parentheses). Press three times to remove the modifiers and make the term required for your search. For example, your WishList search might include:

Title Keyword: Actor: George Clooney-ER This search will find all appearances of George Clooney except for those in the series ER.
  4. Select “Done Creating WishList” when you’re finished entering terms.
  5. Use the confirmation screen to:

View upcoming episodes: See a list of all shows airing in the next two weeks that match your WishList search criteria.

Auto-record WishList programs: Automatically record any shows matching your Wishlist search criteria. The TiVo service will continue auto-recording matching shows until you tell it to stop.

    Edit or delete WishList.

How to find great new shows with TiVo Suggestions

TiVo Suggestions uses your Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down ratings to find and record shows you might like. The more shows you rate over time, the better TiVo suggestions will get at recommending interesting TV and movies for you.

Rating shows

You can rate any show—whether it's live, recorded, or listed in the program guide—by pressing the THUMBS UP or THUMBS DOWN button on your remote. You can give a show up to three Thumbs Up (great!) or three Thumbs Down (terrible!).

TiVo Suggestions keeps track of your ratings and uses them to recommend new shows you might like!

Auto-recording TiVo Suggestions

When your TiVo box has available space, it automatically records TiVo Suggestions. But you don't ever need to worry about recorded Suggestions taking up space—here's why:

TiVo Suggestions never replace shows you request, or prevent your requested shows from being recorded.TiVo Suggestions are always the first shows deleted to make room for recordings you request.

Note: To turn off automatic recording of TiVo Suggestions, go to 'TiVo Central' > 'Settings & Messages' > 'Settings' > 'Recording' > 'TiVo Suggestions.'

When automatic recording is on (the default), TiVo Suggestions may be recorded if there's available space. Remember, recordings you schedule will never be deleted to make room for Suggestions. Also, if space is needed for your recordings, Suggestions are the first shows to be deleted.

Watching TiVo Suggestions

Recorded suggestions appear in the TiVo Suggestions group inside the "My Shows" or "Now Playing" list. You can watch, save, or delete them just like any other shows.

Reviewing upcoming TiVo Suggestions

You can also review a list of upcoming TiVo Suggestions. Here's how:

  1. Locate the TiVo Suggestions list:

go to 'TiVo Central' > 'Find TV, movies, & videos,' > 'Browse TV & Movies' > 'TV' > 'TiVo Suggestions.'

The list of shows programs is ranked, so shows you're more likely to enjoy are near the top.
  2. To record a show, highlight it and press either SELECT or RECORD on your TiVo remote.
  3. Use THUMBS UP and THUMBS DOWN to rate shows in the list to improve future Suggestions.
